Tailbone Pain – Get Rid of the Pain in Your Buttocks

Tailbone pain or coccydynia is typically caused by a backwards fall, although some women suffer this as a result of childbirth. Unfortunately, in about 30% of the cases there is no known cause. Whatever the cause, coccydynia can make it painful and even unbearable to sit down. The pain is caused by the coccyx (tailbone) dislocating when sitting. Symptoms are deep aching around the coccyx, sensitivity to light pressure on the tip or edge of the coccyx, shooting pain in the leg, the sensation of sitting on a marble or a knife, pain during bowel movements and possibly during intercourse. Whatever the symptoms, coccydynia can cause extreme discomfort and agony.

Coccydynia can be very embarrassing. Dealing with tailbone pain can make people feel uncomfortable - carrying a seat cushion draws attention to their problem. Tight clothing can exacerbate the pain. Leaning to one side or the other while standing can ease the pain; others suggest leaning forward is the only position comfortable. However, these postures may eventually cause back pain or injury. While sitting (if possible) make sure to change positions frequently (every 10-20 minutes). Pregnancy exercises can help strengthen the area and ease the pain. These are only suggestions in living with the pain - none of them will provide a cure.

As with other types of nerve and muscle pain, anti-inflammatory drugs can help ease the pain. Non-steroidal over the counter drugs can sometimes offer temporary relief for tailbone pain. Oral steroids also reduce inflammation and therefore help relieve pain. Steroid injections of cortisone offer the same benefit but can be more effective as they administer the medication directly to the affected area. Medications, whether oral or injected, are temporary at best and do not work for all patients. There are a few exercises which might help, but in the case of coccydynia, the problem is not generally muscular. Massage is too painful to be of any use at all.

Spinal Decompression Therapy is a new option, which is gaining widespread support for not only relieving the pain, but helping to resolve the situation for good. For those in Westchester County, this non-surgical method of dealing with tailbone pain is completely safe and comfortable. The therapy is the procedure of reducing the negative pressure surrounding the coccyx, and does not require any medications. Spinal Decompression Therapy can work towards relief of the cause as well as relieving the immediate symptoms.
