Neck Pain – Constant Discomfort May be More than just a Pain in the Neck.

Are you dealing with constant neck pain and discomfort? Is turning your head an agony? Do you lie awake nights unable to find a comfortable position? You do not have to live with chronic neck pain. Our necks are actually one of the hardest working parts of our body, constantly adjusting to support our head and keep us balanced through every move we make and most importantly when we are making remarkable changes of position such as moving from sitting to standing. We need our necks to function well and when they do not the suffering can seem unbearable.

Neck pain can be caused by many things – some benign and some more threatening to long term health. Checking for poor posture is a good starting point – do you slump at your desk or lean over a workbench at an odd angle? Sometimes simply correcting bad posture can eliminate the cause of the pain. Repeated bad posture can lead to disc problems in the cervical vertebrae however, and these problems are not likely to correct themselves.

Under normal circumstances the vertebrae in your neck flex and move, causing the cushioning discs to compress and release. When repeated stress causes one or more of the discs to fail to release after compression, the pressure on the ancillary nerves causes pain. In order to correct this, you need the disc to release from its compressed state. In Westchester County, one of the best therapies available for compressed or herniated discs is DTS or Spinal Decompression Therapy. This gentle therapy uses a special table to stretch your cervical vertebrae and re-encourage normal flexibility in your neck. Most patients report an easing of neck pain after just a single treatment. Over time, it is possible not only eliminate pain altogether, but to encourage the muscles and ligaments supporting the neck and create increased strength and flexibility.

DTS therapy for neck pain is not simply a matter of allowing a machine to ‘fix’ your problems. Your Chiropractor will also be combining this therapy with traditional manipulations, ultra sound treatments and physical therapy. You will be given exercises that you will need to be diligent about completing each and every day. DTS therapy is not just about removing the source of the pain, but also about strengthening the neck and back so that the pain will not re-occur. With dedication and patience you can get rid of the pain in your neck.
