Many adults just try to ignore muscle pain, which is possible for a while, as long as you are still able to function at work, interact with the kids and sleep at night. When the pain becomes too much to handle though, where do you turn for help? The causes for muscle pain can be acute or chronic. Pain from an accident, a workplace injury or a sports injury is immediate and due to direct stress or injury to the muscle. For most of these types of pain the best cure is rest, and time. For chronic pain however, the muscles are not likely to heal themselves and a more specific therapy is needed.
Most chronic muscle pain comes in two forms - inflammation and muscle spasms. If your muscles are inflamed, the pain you will be experiencing will be from the pressure the swollen tissue is placing on surrounding nerve endings. If you are experiencing muscle spasms, they are often in response to another problem (usually skeletal alignment) and the spasms are actually simply a symptom of this other problem. The medical establishment usually responds to these problems by prescribing drugs - either anti-inflammatory or muscle relaxants. Neither of these drugs deal with the underlying cause of the pain.
To end muscle pain you need to deal with the underlying cause - when there is injury you must give time for the muscle to heal. When there are pressure or alignment problems you need to solve those problems to banish the pain. In some cases this may involve combined therapies - for example taking anti-inflammatory drugs while you work on correcting the alignment problems would make sense. In the end run you, as the patient, need to take responsibility for your own treatment. Listen to the advice of the medical professionals, seek 2nd opinions, investigate alternative treatment methods and then make the decision about what is the best care.
There is relief available for your muscle pain. You do not have to simply endure the pain or numb it with drugs. You do not have to give up on an active lifestyle. Consult with your doctor, investigate alternative forms of treatment and research the causes of muscle pain and various treatments at the library or online. When you take an active part in determining what the best treatment for your pain is you are taking the first step necessary to living a life without pain.
