Hip Joint Pain – Hip Joint Pain is Not Just for Old People

Hip joint pain is common problem for people of all ages. There are numerous causes, so diagnosing the problem and finding the cure can be difficult. Trauma is often the cause of hip pain, but any source of inflammation may cause pain in the hip area. Arthritis is perhaps the most common cause for hip pain. Trochanteric bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa over the outside of the hip joint. Tendonitis occurs when any of the tendons surrounding the hip joint becomes inflamed. Osteonecrosis is when blood flow to an area of the hip bone is restricted. Herniated discs and sciatica can also be causes of hip pain. Proper diagnosis is important in determining the right therapy for relieving the pain.

In the case of sciatica or herniated disc there are a variety of therapies available. Ice/Heat therapy can sometimes relieve hip joint pain by alternating heat and ice packs. Some over the counter medications reduce inflammation which helps ease pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs include ibuprofen, acetaminophen or naproxen are all readily available and offer short term temporary relief. Oral steroids can also be effective in reducing pain and inflammation. In more severe cases epidural steroid injections may be prescribed. However, drug therapy has proven to only provide temporary relief.

Other procedures to relieve hip joint pain involve acupuncture, physical therapy, massage or surgery. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese method of therapy using needles at specific points in the body to increase the energy flow. Physical therapy helps increase muscle strength and flexibility through a series of exercises. Because inactivity tends to make hip pain more pronounced, adding physical activity is good for all forms of therapy. Surgery may be an option, but can be very invasive, particularly with hip joints. If the pain is due to a herniated disc, microdiscectomy (spinal surgery) may be necessary in order to repair the disc, or fuse the vertebrae together. There can be extensive loss of movement with this procedure, however.

There is a new non-surgical method available, however. Spinal Decompression Therapy is a non-invasive process performed by a certified clinician. This safe, painless procedure reduces hip joint pain by negative pressure. The process also encourages water, oxygen and other vital nutrients to flow back into the damaged area, promoting healing. For those who would like to consider a drug free approach to health, Spinal Decompression Therapy offers an excellent option for the relieving of hip pain.
