Disc Herniation Pain - New Options in Relieving Disc Herniation Pain

Sufferers of disc herniation pain often complain of pain in their back, upper or lower leg or of weakness in the extremity muscles. This is caused by the soft cushion sitting between the vertebrae of the spine, called the spinal disc. This disc can become rigid, impacted or pushed out of its normal position as a result of age or sudden strain on the back due to activity. People, as young as 30, can have evidence of disc deterioration. Disc herniation pain can be extremely debilitating, forcing sufferers to miss work, unable to sit or stand for more than a few minutes or even unable to get out of bed.

Disc herniation pain is caused when the soft cushion between the vertebrae is pushed out of place or ruptures. When this happens the nerves become pinched and irritated. A herniated disc may occur suddenly because of an accident or by lifting using the back muscles incorrectly. It also may occur gradually through repetitive activity or stress on the spine. Generally people who have a herniated disc also have spinal stenosis, a problem where the spinal cord area is reduced through age. When a disc becomes herniated, the area for the nerves is reduced even further causing irritation and pain.

The most often prescribed treatment of disc herniation pain is rest and activity modification. In more severe cases, alternating ice and heat to the affected area can help by restricting the blood flood and then relaxing the muscles in the area. Physical therapy is also an option attempting to stabilize the lumbar region through exercises. Anti-inflammatory medications, such as Motrin, can temporarily relive the pain. Steroids can also be prescribed to reduce inflammation thus reducing the pain, or epidural steroids of cortisone can be injected directly into the area. In the most extreme cases surgery is recommended if the herniated disc is affecting neurological activity elsewhere in the body.

Non-surgical methods are available through Spinal Decompression Therapy. This non-invasive method does not use pain medications and is not only safe (and painless) but relaxing and comfortable. The therapy consists of several treatments over the course of 4-6 weeks, each utilizing a unique physio-therapeutic procedure by a certified clinician. During treatments, spinal pressure is reduced. This negative pressure encourages water, oxygen and blood into the disc area, allowing re-hydration of the herniated disc. The result is a relieving of disc herniation pain and the ability to return to normal activity.
