Chronic Neck Pain - Getting Rid of that Pain in the Neck

There are numerous conditions which can cause chronic neck pain, often referred to as cervical pain. Most of the spine, the lumbar, thoracic and sacral regions are protected with the torso, but the neck is exposed, supported by only a few muscles and ligaments. Even with this, the neck provides vital services, air flow to the lungs, blood and oxygen to the brain and a surprising range of motion. While neck injuries do not typically affect these vital functions, the injuries can be incapacitating. They are a major source of lost work days and, in the case of automobile accidents, a reason for litigation.

Neck strain, whiplash, herniated disc or a pinched nerve can cause chronic neck pain. Neck strains are injuries resulting from rotation and compression (when the force of impact is located on the top of the head). Whiplash is when a person's neck following a sudden acceleration-deceleration force when the head is flung backward (hyperextension) and forward (hyperflexion). If pain radiates down the arm, and perhaps into the hands and fingers, this is generally either caused by a herniated cervical disc, or the pinching of a nerve in the neck.

A cervical collar might be suggested to aid in the support of the neck during the body's self healing process for chronic neck pain. A small pillow under the nape of the neck while sleeping provides the same support. Heat can ease the pain, but has not shown to aid healing. Using an over the counter anti-inflammatory drug such as Motrin or acetaminophen can help with the pain, but does not aid healing. For extreme pain your doctor may prescribe codeine as a muscle relaxant. In the case of a herniated cervical disc, surgery of the spinal cord impingement (decompression surgery) or spinal instability (fusion surgery), can allow for mobility and stability. Physical therapy can aid the healing process by helping to build up muscles. However, this is typically accompanied with drug therapy to ease the pain.

For residents of Westchester County, Spinal Decompression Therapy offers a non-invasive, non-surgical method of healing not found in other methods. The procedure uses negative pressure on the spine, allowing an increase flow of water and oxygen to the affected area. It will reduce spinal pressure, alleviating chronic neck pain and speeding recovery. While it is possible to "heal thyself" in many cases, there is no reason to live with the pain, when options are available.
