Buttock Pain - Why Suffer from Buttock Pain When You Don’t Have To?

Pain the buttocks region can be caused by a number of different problems, sciatica, hip arthritis, sacroilitis or Piriformis Syndrome. Sciatica is an irritation of the sciatic nerve. Hip arthritis is inflammation of the lower lumbar region which can pinch the sciatic nerve. Sacroilitis is inflammation of the sacroiliac joint located in the lower back. Piriformis muscle is the small muscles deep in the buttocks which help rotate the leg. Running from the base of the spine, it attaches to the thigh bone with the sciatic nerve running through it. If the muscle tightens too much it puts pressure on the sciatic nerve it will create a pain radiating down the leg. Regardless of the reason, buttock pain can be excruciating and debilitating.

There are a variety of options available to help relieve buttock pain. Many over the counter drugs can reduce the pain by reducing the inflammation. Ibuprofen, Motrin or naproxen all are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications which may work. Steroids are also sometimes recommended for treatments. Oral versions may be more effective than the over the counter non-steroidal medications in reducing inflammation. Epidural steroid injections like cortisone administer the medication directly to the inflamed region. However, medications are generally only temporary and do not always work.

If the buttock pain is the result of a sports injury, physical therapy might be prescribed. Physical therapy can help increase the strength of the core muscles by stretching or manipulating the injured area. Acupuncture is a recognized treatment of back pain by the AMA. The process improves the flowing of energy pathways through the body creating a sense of well being. Like physical therapy, massage can help with mobility and to relieve the pain. However, massage may only be temporary relief. If the pain is deep in the sciatic region or due to a herniated disc, surgery may be considered, particularly if the pain is not eased after applications of several of non-surgical methods.

Spinal Decompression Therapy is a new option available to those suffering from buttock pain in Westchester County. This non-surgical, non-invasive method is safe, comfortable and pain free, without the use of costly medications. The therapy consists of several treatments by a certified clinician. A physio-therapeutic procedure reduces the negative pressure surrounding the spine, allowing vital nutrients to flow back into the area. This type of therapy works toward relief of the underlying cause and not just the immediate relief of symptoms.
