Many people suffer with arthritis pain, and not just the elderly. Dealing with the pain can be difficult, particularly with arthritis; however, it is possible to keep it from impacting your life. The first step is to understand which type of arthritis you have, because that may determine treatment. It is also important to understand the reasons behind the pain, which is the way your body communicates something is wrong. When you are injured, nerves in the area release chemical signals your brain perceives as pain. Often we consider pain something we must deal with rather than something we can prevent.
There are several types of arthritis, which literally means joint inflammation and refers to over a hundred different diseases. The two most common are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Osteoarthritis or osteoarthroses is a degenerative joint disease and is the most common form. Osteoarthritis is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage around the joints, causing the bones to rub against each other resulting in stiffness and pain. Rheumatoid Arthritis is also a chronic disease, but is characterized by the inflammation of the lining around the joints. If untreated, it can lead to long-term damage by inflaming the joint beyond use causing extreme pain and loss of functionality.
For both of these types of arthritis pain, larger doses of aspirin or drugs that are like aspirin can effectively reduce inflammation as well as pain. However, tinnitus, hepatitis or renal damage can also occur with high-dosage aspirin therapy. In the event that arthritis is severe, some disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs may be prescribed. Other immunosuppressants biologic response modifiers have been tried with limited results. All must be used with close supervision as they all can produce side effects that can be hazardous. Heat in conjunction with physical therapy is typically suggested along with drug therapy. Exercise helps arthritis pain sufferers maintain strength and mobility, and keep arthritic joints more supple. All of these methods are simply pain-coping methods.
There are some forms of arthritis which are the result of ligament or cartilage damage or injury. These forms of arthritis pain may be relieved with Spinal Decompression Therapy. This non-invasive method does not use pain medication, but rather a negative pressure of the joint allowing an increased flow of nutrients to the area promoting healing. The process is safe, comfortable and painless. So, depending on what type of arthritis you have, there may be options available to you which do not pose further health risks.
